Public Meeting – 11th July 7:30pm – Village Hall

Weston SOS are pleased to share that we’ll be holding a public consultation meeting on Tuesday 11th July at 7:30pm at the Weston on the Green Village Memorial Hall to present our plan for the future of the Shop and Post Office. Put it in your calendar!

It’s been a while since we shared any news – but we’ve been busy in the background analysing the results of the survey and narrowing down our options and coming up with a feasible plan of how to ‘Save our Sandwiches/Staff/Sausage Rolls/Shop!

To give you an idea of what we’ve been up to since May:

  • We’ve successfully submitted and passed through the Expression of Interest for the Community Ownership Fund (subject to incorporation with an appropriate legal structure).
  • We’ve submitted and passed through Stage 1 of the Valencia Community Grant (operators of the Ardley ERF) for a large grant.
  • We’ve received paid advisor support from the Plunkett Foundation and joined as a member.
  • We’ve commissioned a buildings survey (thanks to David Buchanan in the village) and independent property valuation.
  • Working on a full business plan, planning around the Post Office and figuring out the appropriate legal structure and support for community ownership within Weston and nearby villages.

Thanks to recent changes in the Community Ownership Fund and the considerable support expressed in the survey, we think the community ownership route is looking feasible so we’ve been working hard in the background on the planning to make that a reality and we think we’re just about ready to share a summary of our plan with the local community.

This means that you’ll be able to purchase community shares in the shop and have your say to ensure its long term success. We’ll be able to reinvest profits in improving the shop or towards other local community projects.

The current owner has done a great job to make the shop a success and win the support of the village so we don’t intend to mess too much with the shop ‘recipe’ – we intend to keep on the current staff & volunteers in the shop and the selection of essential groceries, Post Office services and local produce that you’ve shown you value so dearly from our survey.

Thank-you to everyone that has contributed to the survey and shown their support so far.

The goals of the meeting are to:

  • Present our vision and a summary of our plan to save the Shop and Post Office
  • Questions & answers from the community
  • Recruit additional members to the Management Committee
  • Seek pledges of support

If you want to find out more – please come along to our meeting on the 11th July at 7:30pm.

As always – feel free to get in touch.
